Austrians 1-2-3 after opening slalom run

Austrian skiers held the top three spots after the opening run of a World Cup slalom on the Gran Risa course Monday.

Herbst won the opening slalom of the season in Levi, Finland, last month.

Slalom world champion Manfred Pranger led in 53.35 seconds, and Reinfried Herbst was second, 0.22 seconds behind.

Barcelona beats Estudiantes 2-1 for Club World Cup

Barcelona won the Club World Cup on Saturday, beating Estudiantes 2-1 on Lionel Messi’s goal in extra time.

Messi chested Daniel Alves’ cross into the goal in the 110th minute. Estudiantes had gone ahead in the 37th minute on Mauro Boselli’s header. The Spanish champions tied the score when Pedro Rodriguez headed home a goal in the 89th minute.

Osborne-Paradis wins Saslong downhill; Miller 9th

Manuel Osborne-Paradis of Canada won a World Cup downhill on the Saslong course on Saturday, while Bode Miller battled a sore ankle and headwinds to finish ninth.

Mario Scheiber of Austria was second, 0.13 seconds behind, while Swiss racer Ambrosi Hoffmann and Johan Clarey of France tied for third, 0.

Brodeur passes Roy for most games played

Martin Brodeur broke Patrick Roy’s record for regular-season appearances by a goaltender when he started his 1,030th game for the New Jersey Devils against the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Brodeur set the NHL record for career wins by a goaltender last year, breaking another mark previously set by Roy.

Spain No. 1, US 14th in final soccer rankings

Spain is ranked No. 1 in the year-end FIFA standings for the second straight year, while the United States is ranked 14th.

The Netherlands and world champion Italy stayed third and fourth as the top 10 remained unchanged.

In rankings published Wednesday, the European champion maintained the lead it took last month from South American champion Brazil.

Oshie, Blues beat Flames 4-3

T.J. Oshie scored the go-ahead goal with 4:58 to play, helping the St. Louis Blues beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Tuesday night for only their sixth victory in 18 home games.

The Blues have honored Hull twice, but the first wasn’t a complete success. St. Louis was beaten 5-1 by the Detroit Red Wings in December 2006 in the final game before coach Mike Kitchen was fired.

Leandro Benitezs double strike inspired Copa Libertadores winners Estudiantes de La Plata to a 2-1 win over Pohang Steelers FC to book their place in the Club World Cup final here on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Shin Hwa Yong was red-carded for handling the ball outside the area in the 77th minute - Kim Jae-Sung received his second yellow card in the 72nd minute for a foul on Juan Sebastian Veron, and skipper Jae Won saw red in the 56th minute when he was booked for the second time.

UConn No. 1 for 30th straight week in AP Top 25

It’s been almost a decade since Connecticut has had a run this long at No. 1.

The Huskies are still six short of the all-time record of 36 consecutive weeks at No. 1, held by Louisiana Tech from 1980-82.

The top-ranked Huskies remained No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the 30th straight week, matching the longest run atop the poll in school history.

Italian league leaders Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw at Atalanta on Sunday that prevented them from fully capitalising on slips-up by their main title rivals, Juventus and AC Milan.

Jose Mourinhos side were made to toil in the second period following the 65th-minute dismissal of midfielder Wesley Sneijder for two bookable offences and they allowed Atalanta to snatch a point through substitute Simone Tiribocchi with nine minutes to play.

Kings tie for 1st in West with 3-2 shootout win

Michal Handzus scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of a shootout, and the Los Angeles Kings moved into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Los Angeles, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002, tied San Jose for the top spot in the conference with 45 points.
