Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will have surgery to repair a ligament in his right thumb, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Saturday night.

The news means Lowell is staying in Boston, at least for now. The Red Sox had been set to trade him to Texas for catcher Max Ramirez - if the Rangers were satisfied Lowell was healthy.

Lackey finalizes 5-year deal with Red Sox

Pitcher John Lackey has finalized a five-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, a deal worth $80 million to $87.5 million.

General manager Theo Epstein called Lackey a significant boost to the team.

The top pitcher in the free agent market joins a strong rotation that includes right-hander Josh Beckett, and lefty Jon Lester.

The Boston Red Sox have made a double splash in the free agent market by signing former Los Angeles Angels starter John Lackey and outfielder Mike Cameron, Major League Baseball website mlb.com reported Tuesday.

Pending results of a physical exam he took in Boston, Lackey will join Josh Beckett and left-hander Jon Lester at the top of a rotation that also includes Daisuke Matsuzaka.

White Sox get OF Pierre from Dodgers

The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Juan Pierre and cash from the Los Angeles Dodgers for two players to be named.

Pierre, 32, hit .308 (117-380) with 30 stolen bases, 57 runs and a .365 on-base percentage in 145 games with the Dodgers in 2009.

The club announced the move Tuesday.

Pierre was on 2003 Florida Marlins team that won the World Series.

A baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations says John Lackey and the Boston Red Sox have reached a tentative agreement on a five-year contract.

Lackey, the top pitcher on the free-agent market after eight seasons with the Angels, was in Boston for a physical on Monday needed to complete the agreement, the official said.

The Boston Red Sox got a pitcher on the first day of the winter meetings.

The Red Sox are among the teams interested in acquiring Toronto ace Roy Halladay.

Right-hander Scott Atchison has agreed to a one-year contact after spending the last two seasons with Hanshin of Japan’s Central League.

He is guaranteed $430,000 in Monday’s deal.

Marco Scutaro slipped on his new Red Sox jersey to pose for the cameras, then asked whether he should leave it on for the rest of the news conference.

You’ll excuse Scutaro if he’s tentative about slipping into a position that’s seen little stability since 2004. Boston has churned through seven regular shortstops since trading away Nomar Garciaparra, but Epstein thinks he has one that can solidify the position for at leas the next two years.

The Red Sox are hoping Marco Scutaro is the solution at shortstop, at least for the next two years.

Scutaro hit career highs with a .282 average, 12 homers and 60 RBIs for Toronto last year. He has also played for the New York Mets and Oakland Athletics in his eight-year career.

After cycling through seven shortstops since the middle of the 2004 season, the Red Sox agreed to give Scutaro a two-year deal, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal.
