Bears’ Hester questionable with strained calf

Chicago Bears receiver Devin Hester is questionable to return Monday against the Minnesota Vikings after missing two games with a strained left calf.

Punter Brad Maynard did not practice Saturday and is also questionable with a left groin injury. Also questionable are defensive end Gaines Adams with an ankle and safety Al Afalava with a knee.

Liverpool win but fail to convince against 10-man Wolves

Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun scored second-half goals as Liverpool toiled to a 2-0 win over 10-man Wolves at Anfield on Saturday.

Gerrard soon scored his first goal in almost two months — his fifth of the campaign — to put Liverpool ahead.

The Reds were frustrated by Mick McCarthys team until referee Andre Marriner sent Stephen Ward off just after the interval.

No. 22 Huskies rally past No. 19 Aggies

Quincy Pondexter kept sluggish Washington afloat, scoring 16 of his 25 points in the first half, and the 22nd-ranked Huskies beat No. 19 Texas A&M 73-64 on Tuesday night in a game marred - and largely decided - by a gruesome injury to Aggies senior Derrick Roland.

Coach Mark Turgeon ran on the court while play continued at the other end.

Yankees deal Cabrera to Braves for pitcher Vazquez

The New York Yankees filled out their rotation by trading for starter Javier Vazquez on Tuesday, sending outfielder Melky Cabrera to the Atlanta Braves in a package deal.

The 33-year-old Vazquez, who went 15-10 with a 2.87 earned run average last season, also pitched for the Yankees in 2004 when he went 14-10 with a 4.

Scottie Upshall had two goals and two assists to help the Phoenix Coyotes beat the reeling Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 Monday night for their seventh straight home win.

Shane Doan and Matthew Lombardi each had a goal and two assists, Radim Vrbata also scored and Ed Jovanovski added two assists for the Coyotes, who have won three of their past four.

Giants missing 2 DBs, McKenzie against Redskins

Defensive backs Corey Webster and Aaron Ross are inactive for the New York Giants against the Washington Redskins.

Webster has a left knee injury, and Ross has a left hamstring problem.

The Giants also are without starting right tackle Kareem McKenzie, who has a left knee injury and is being replaced by Will Beatty on Monday night.

Smith, White lead Texas A&M to win over Gonzaga

Tanisha Smith scored 20 points, and Tyra White added 18 to help No. 13 Texas A&M beat Gonzaga 80-76 on Sunday night in the Las Vegas Hoops Classic.

Courtney Vandersloot scored 16 points, and Heather Bowman added 15 for the Zags.

The Aggies built a 20-point lead before surviving a late rally by the Bulldogs in the final 10 minutes.

Griner’s near triple-double leads Baylor over ASU

Brittney Griner had 27 points, 10 rebounds, and eight blocks to help No. 6 Baylor hold off No. 14 Arizona State 70-66 on Sunday night in the Las Vegas Hoops Classic.

Griner took over in the second half, scoring 18 of her points and blocking six shots. Her three-point play with 4:47 left gave Baylor (11-1) a five-point lead.

Huet, Blackhawks beat Red Wings 3-0

Cristobal Huet made 20 saves for his second straight shutout, and Duncan Keith had a goal and an assist to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to their fourth victory in a row, 3-0 over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night.

Huet, also a 3-0 winner over St. Louis on Wednesday night, had to make only a handful of tough saves against the injury-depleted Red Wings en route to his third shutout this season, 23rd overall and first against Detroit.

Maclin, Westbrook out for Eagles

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and running back Brian Westbrook are both inactive for Sunday’s game against San Francisco.

Maclin left last week’s win over the Giants with a torn plantar fascia, tissue at the bottom of his left foot. Maclin may return for the Dec. 27 matchup with Denver.

Westbrook has missed the last five games and seven of the last eight with a concussion.
