Augustana College football coach Brad Salem has resigned to take an assistant’s job at Michigan State.

Augustana on Friday named defensive coordinator Mike Aldrich to succeed Salem.

Salem will coach running backs for the Spartans. He compiled a 31-26 record in five seasons as Vikings head coach.

Hiddink to take over as Turkey coach

Much-travelled Guus Hiddink is on the move again taking over as head coach of Turkey as they gear up for the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

He will take over in August a month after the end of his current contract as head coach of Russia.

The Turkish Football Federation on its website Wednesday announced that that the Dutchman had agreed on a two-year contract, with an option for a further two years.

Ex-coach Sutton pleads not guilty to drug charges

The attorney for former Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton entered a not guilty plea to four felony drug-related charges Tuesday and said his client is in a treatment center.

Sutton, 41, was arrested Thursday after agents from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs said he picked up a shipment of painkillers under another person’s name.

Nuggets add year to coach Karl’s contract

The Denver Nuggets have extended coach George Karls contract through the 2010-11 season, the NBA team said on Friday.

Karl has guided Denver to the NBA playoffs five consecutive seasons since becoming the Nuggets coach in January 2005.

Financial terms of the one-year extension were not disclosed.

The Nuggets (35-18) are second in the Western Conference, earning Karl the honor of coaching the West in Sundays NBA All-Star Game.

Former Lakers, WVU coach Fred Schaus dies at 84

Fred Schaus, a former Los Angeles Lakers coach and general manager who mentored Jerry West and Hot Rod Hundley at West Virginia, has died. He was 84.

“Fred’s passing brings finality to a relationship that began in 1955, when he first came to our house to introduce himself as the coach of West Virginia University,” West said in a statement released by the school.

East Texas coach arrested after end-of-game tirade

The women’s basketball coach at an East Texas junior college and one of his players was released on bond Thursday after their arrests after a game.

According to Blinn spokeswoman Cathy Boeker, Damuth angrily charged game officials at the final buzzer of No. 4-ranked Trinity Valley’s 61-55 loss Wednesday night at Blinn, then struggled with a campus police officer who was trying to restrain him.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says Niklas Kronwall will not play against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and Tomas Holmstrom is questionable because of knee injuries.

Swede Johan Franzen had an assist in a shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, playing for the first time in four months since having surgery on his left knee.

Bob Knight named Trine University’s grad speaker

Former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight will return to the state this spring to be the commencement speaker at Trine University.

The private school in Angola said Tuesday that Knight would also receive an honorary doctor of public service degree in recognition of his commitment to improving the lives of young people.

Payton feels weight of history after Super Bowl triumph

New Orleans Saints Super Bowl winning coach Sean Payton felt the weight of history on Monday as he woke up beside the Vince Lombardi Trophy and then received a congratulatory phone call from his mentor Bill Parcells.

Payton got his hands on his first Super Bowl trophy, the silverware named after former Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, a five times NFL championship winner and regarded as the greatest coach of all.
