Boston Celtics All-Star Ray Allen has been suspended for one game by the NBA for elbowing Cleveland’s Anderson Varejao in the groin on Sunday.

Allen was scheduled to serve the suspension in Tuesday night’s game in Philadelphia against the 76ers.

Allen was thrown to the court after his arm got tangled up with Varejao’s in the third quarter of the Cavaliers’ 107-76 victory.

Nationals option CF Lastings Milledge to minors

Lastings Milledge lasted all of one week as the Washington Nationals’ leadoff hitter.

“He is still a work-in-progress as a leadoff man,” assistant general manager Mike Rizzo said during a conference call.

Off to an 0-7 start this season after finishing with a majors-high 102 losses in 2008, the Nationals optioned their starting center fielder to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.

Xavier assistant Chris Mack promoted to coach

Xavier has promoted assistant Chris Mack to succeed Sean Miller as basketball coach.

Mack was the top assistant to Miller, who left last week to coach Arizona. He inherits a team that went 27-8 last season and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament before losing to Pittsburgh.

The university said Tuesday there will be a news conference Wednesday .

Veteran Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen has been suspended one game for elbowing Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao, the NBA said on Tuesday.

Allen, who averages 18.2 points and 3.5 rebounds, will serve his suspension when the Celtics visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.

Allen elbowed Varejao in the groin with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter of the Celtics 107-76 loss to the host Cavaliers on Sunday.

Glavine told to rest strained shoulder

Atlanta Braves left-hander Tom Glavine has inflammation in his left rotator cuff, and he will rest for two weeks before being evaluated again.

General manager Frank Wren said the Braves “were happy that it wasn’t more serious.”

The 43-year-old was examined Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews and had an MRI.

Chelsea scrape past Liverpool in Champions League

Last years beaten finalists Chelsea edged into the Champions League semi-finals here on Tuesday in a thrilling 4-4 draw to win 7-5 on aggregate.

However, England midfielder Frank Lampard at last put the result beyond doubt when he scored in the final minute to set Chelsea up with a semi-final clash with Barcelona.

De La Hoya says he’s quitting the ring

Oscar De La Hoya is calling it quits in the ring.

De La Hoya is retiring four months after he was thoroughly beaten by Manny Pacquiao in his fourth loss in his last seven fights. It’s been several years since De La Hoya beat a truly daunting opponent. He finishes with a record of 39-6 and 30 knockouts.

Adenhart funeral planned for Friday in Maryland

A funeral home says a memorial service for Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart will be held Friday at Williamsport High School, where Adenhart played as a teen.

The 22-year-old rookie and two friends were killed Thursday when a driver whom police say was drunk ran a red light and hit their car in Fullerton, Calif.

Documents show Missouri missteps in player’s death

Legal documents obtained by The Associated Press show University of Missouri officials failed to follow policies for medical emergencies when freshman linebacker Aaron O’Neal collapsed and later died during a 2005 summer workout.

Athletic department employees also showed an unfamiliarity with potential exercise-induced complications caused by sickle cell trait.
