Ingram delivers Alabama its first Heisman

Mark Ingram completed the trophy case at Alabama, delivering the first Heisman to a school that boasts one of the richest histories in college football.

Ingram finished 28 points ahead of Stanford running back Toby Gerhart.

The tough-running sophomore tailback turned tearful after winning the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in the closest vote in the award’s 75-year history.

Broncos S Bruton doesn’t travel to Indy

Rookie safety David Bruton did not travel with his teammates when the Denver Broncos flew to Indianapolis for their game Sunday against the unbeaten Colts.

Bruton has a thigh injury that limited him in practice this week. He had been listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.

Cust, Gomes, Redding become free agents

Power-hitting Jack Cust, closer Mike MacDougal and outfielder Jonny Gomes joined an already saturated free agent market when they weren’t offered contracts for next year by their teams on Saturday.

By early evening teams had announced they were letting 15 players go free, and all but three of them would have been eligible for salary arbitration if they had been offered contracts.

Freshman Harris leads No. 21 Zags over Davidson

Freshman Elias Harris scored a season-high 27 points and No. 21 Gonzaga overcame the absence of leading scorer Matt Bouldin to beat Davidson 103-91 on Saturday night.

Bouldin sat out three days after he was cracked just below the temple by an opponent’s forehead and said he was knocked out briefly early in a win over Division III Augustana of Illinois on Wednesday.

Nielsen lifts Isles past Bruins in OT

Frans Nielsen scored 24 seconds into overtime to give New York a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night, snapping the Islanders’ losing streak at three games.

David Krejci and Michael Ryder scored for Boston. The Bruins (16-9-6) had won two straight and were 8-1-1 in their previous 10.

Cotts becomes free when Cubs fail to offer deal

Left-hander Neal Cotts became a free agent when the Chicago Cubs failed to offer a 2010 contract.

Cotts, who made $1.1 million this year, spent the past three seasons with the Cubs. He spent the previous four seasons across town with the White Sox and helped them win the 2005 World Series, when he appeared in all four games.

Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard is inactive for Saturday night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats.

“We feel it’s the right thing to do,” Carlisle said. “We don’t have another back-to-back until late in the month. The hope is that by that time he’ll be able to do back-to-backs. But we’ll wait and see.

AP Source: Gill offered Kansas job

A person familiar with Kansas’ coaching search tells The Associated Press that Buffalo’s Turner Gill has been offered the job.

Yahoo! Sports reported Gill had agreed to take over for Mark Mangino, who resigned Dec. 3 after a two-week investigation into his treatment of players. ESPN.com also reported Gill had accepted the job.

Dolphins center Grove will miss 3rd straight game

Miami Dolphins center Jake Grove has been ruled out for the third game in a row because of an ankle injury.

Joe Berger will make his third consecutive start in place of Grove.

Grove did not accompany the Dolphins Saturday for their trip to play at Jacksonville on Sunday. The move was expected after he was unable to practice Friday.

German agrees to 1-year contract with Rangers

Infielder Esteban German has agreed to a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers.

Texas offered contracts Saturday to its seven other players eligible for arbitration: outfielder Josh Hamilton, left-hander C.J. Wilson, and right-handers Scott Feldman, Frank Francisco, Brandon McCarthy, Dustin Nippert and Chris Ray.
